Walled Cities

Kowloon Walled City (aka Hak Nam) in Hong Kong was a jewel, a "primitive" urban development - an anomaly that slipped through the cracks. It tells its own beautiful story of the human capacity to organize and dwell without regulation or top-down control (as shifty / dirty / unhealthy as the city was). At times the complex housed up to 33,000 people in a 6.5-acre area. It was condemned and subsequently destroyed by the government in 1993. A park now stands in its place.
