A poem is a piece of writing that has features of both speech and song.
I do not know which was the oldest transmitted poem in English, but I can imagine that human beings have rhymed since the human language exists.

Let us post in this thread old and new, modern and forgotten Anglo-Saxon poesie ..

You may also post videos from youtube or so but please - don't just "coy and paste" something, tell us something about it. Thank you so much for your kind cooperation.

I will start with a song, full of pure poesie.. and written by the famous Freddy Mercury and arranged by Mike Moran in 1987.

Read it first and than listen to the wonderful sound recording with Freddy and Montserrat Caballé.

How Can I Go On?
When all the salt is taken from the sea
I stand dethroned
I'm naked and I bleed
But when your finger points so savagely
Is anybody there to believe in me
To hear my plea and take care of me?

How can I go on
From day to day
Who can make me strong in every way
Where can I be safe
Where can I belong
In this great big world of sadness
How can I forget
Those beautiful dreams that we shared
They're lost and I know where to be found

How can I go on?

Sometimes I seem to tremble in the dark
I cannot see
When people frighten me
I try to hide myself so far from the crowd

Is anybody there to comfort me
Lord take care of me

How can I go on
From day to day
Who can make me strong in every way
Where can I be safe
Where can I belong
In this great big world of sadness
How can I forget
Those beautiful dreams that we shared
They're lost and I know where to be found
How can I go on?

enjoy!

Hi, Wolkenschieber,

Good idea, actually, to try and keep this English section going somehow with this fresh approach. I might think of something nice to share with you, too. But before I do that:

You may also post videos from youtube or so but please - don't just "coy and paste" something, tell us something about it.

Good idea again but what about yourself, I wonder? What do you want to tell us about this song? Might be an auspicious beginning.
Looking forward to it and let's hope I'm not the only one.
Love, Federstrich

What do you mean, Sir?
Didn't I posted the complete text of the poetic song and the composer and writer? And not simply commentlessly a video without any personal note like in many other threads?
No wonder that interesting subjects are thwarted by smug criticisms like yours. Go ahead and make it better. How about this?
too bad that you screwed it up

Oh, don't you think you're overreacting a bit? Yes, you wrote an introduction to the thread, posted a video and copied and pasted the corresponding lyrics. Fair enough. The interesting bit would have been your personal view, though, to "tell us about it". That's exactly what you yourself expect from others.
So, I just wondered why you didn't tell us about why you picked it, what you like about it? I wouldn't have done so if you hadn't mentioned that in your introduction. That's all I noticed and pointed out.
Now, all I'm getting from you are unjustified allegations and personal insults. If you are blaming me for allegedly foiling this thread, then you are underestimating the other readers. It's only them who can decide. Well, then...

who you think you are speaking for all the readers?
What do you expect when I wrote "tell us something about it ..."? Do you want to know what the weather was like in the day the day he wrote that lines? Why did he wrote it and where? You are the headmaster or why do you have nothing better to do than criticize me in this way? Again: Show me how to do it better. But do not criticize around here without being constructive.

@webmaster please delete this thread. It is destroyed anyway. No one needs that kind of mood-making

For one thing, I don't speak for "all the readers". On the contrary, I said I would leave it to them to make up their mind what to think of this. They don't need you to tell them. For another thing, who do you think you are? Why don't you just stop insulting me? I'm a member here like you and all the others and I take the liberty of writing here just as you are. Thirdly, I certainly don't take orders from you. So, stop telling me what and when I have to do something. This is so silly.
PS: Karl won't look here. You'd have to contact him directly.

again - you don't have to tell me what I must do, okay?
Look for someone else to get rid of your frustration!

Again, can you think of anything else than parroting me? I'm as happy as can be.

i listened to the song and found it beautiful, so I hesitate to erase the discussion here completely. Instead I suggest to forget about the dispute and return to the poesie. Please!

Wow cracky, that touches me strongly. I sat here and listened and had goose pimples and tears in my eyes. I never heard Freddie Mercury sing that strongly.
The words are sort of depressive?
What think others?

Now to really understand the meaning of this thread I would like to ask Wolkenschieber again., Is it above all English poetry and why the words touch me, we could choose?
I do have some English poems I love and if you like I could put them in. But to explain in many words why they touch me is sometimes a bit difficult. Maybe even personal. That is just my opinion.
OK you dears?
Fedi come on don’t be a spoil sport 
