John Wooden John Robert Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010) was an American basketball player and head coach at the University of California at Los Angeles. Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood," was a great coach.
He won 10 NCAA National Championships in a 12 year period, including an unprecedented 7 in a row.
Wooden was named the national coach of the year 6 times. Wooden was also the first person ever enshrined as a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and as a coach.
John Wooden was regarded as one of the wisest and best college coaches in the history of college basketball.
